Why not just hand count and forget the machines.
Machines are more accurate and more secure than hand counters.

Would you prefer the clerk at the store to count your change by hand? Or maybe an abacus like some Asian street vendors?

After all, those electronics, they're all hackable, even those handheld calculators ...
