Both the Russians and the Allies imported German Scientists after WW2. The USA got Wernher von Braun and a bunch of others whose main skill were developing methods for killing a lot of Human Beings. There is some good conspiracy theories out there on what they did, but none provable. The one on Lime disease is a good one, and with some believable reasons.

But back to technology and manufacturing. The USA had the best guys at the end of WW2. Helped clobber both Nazi Germany and Japan. I am talking about the machines, and the work methods used to make them.

Rather then use these guys to continuously improve USA manufacturing, the big shots at the top regarded them as trouble makers and sent them over to Japan to help rebuild the economy over there as it had been utterly destroyed.

Below is old footage, excuse the poor video quality, but it is about quality and quantity.

Basically the philosophy of an organization is about Continuity of Purpose, not the quarterly dividend. It's been proven over and over again. If one thinks about it seriously, it's obvious. No one wants to buy crap. eos.

A lot of folks mistakenly think Deming is just statistics and continuous improvement. Completely wrong and lots of supposedly "modern" consultants have just extracted that aspect of Demings work to help companies show a profitable quarter or whatever. It is the philosophy that really makes the difference, its all about the people.

A real Deming type company wipes the floor with its competition.

I spent most of my time competing with the Japanese. Even in College I remember the Japanese being praised in the press. The British TV manufacturers laughed openly when the Japanese guaranteed their colour TV sets for two years or more. The were expected to all go out of business in a short time. When checked later they found the Japanese TV component makers were already guaranteeing their products for 5 years. The British manufacturing didn't stand a chance.

I only found out what the real deal was in the late 1980's.

There is a lot more I could say, but that video covers the basics.

In 1956 the film "The Seven Samurai", is brimming with the Deming concepts (it's just my opinion only far as I know). I don't think that is any accident or coincidence. Japan was back on track and the film was a celebration of what was happening. The Toyota Land Cruiser was the new competitor for the Willys Jeep. The rest is history.
