I have been saved several times by penicillin.

Once when I had some bad skin abrasions from a building project. I was out of work at the time, there was some sort of strike on and I couldn't see a doctor. After a few days the injury started going a fairly bright red. There was a hospital a mile or so away, I was a bit bored anyway so I walked over to the emergency department, thinking is was all a waste of time, and I would be waiting a long time to see a doctor.

After an hour or two a doctor examined the wound and said I was very fortunate to come in. If I had left it for a few more days, and the infections had got into the lymph glands, I would of been in a very serios condition indeed.

The second time was at the beginning of Covid. I was in a car cash and carted off to hospital, and has to stay for about a week. I can verify the hospitals were nearly empty (opposite to the news at the time) and whole wards were closed down with the power switched off to save on the electricity. Anyway I was scared stiff for a lot of reasons, but one of them was catching MRSA or something like it. Sure enough a builder was put in the bed next to me with a totally scarlet leg with a deep and dangerous skin infection, and yes I caught it too.

I hardly ever take antibiotics and can take penicillin. Even so I followed the doctors recommendation to the very letter each time and recovered. Big sigh of relief.

It's amazing how one small problem can lead to so many other much bigger problems.
