"Indeed, from day one, Trump has chosen a style of campaigning and governing that focuses on narrowcasting and fan service directed toward his most rabid base, even at the expense of offending Reagan conservatives, suburban women, independents, etc."
The former president and his GOP cheerleaders repeatedly threaten to purge disloyal lawmakers, candidates and donors, and some Republicans – most notably, Arizona's Kari Lake – simply refuse to accept losing election results and engage in acrimonious legal battles.
"Based on the way things are headed, come November, Donald Trump could very well receive a similar message from the people he dismissed as ' human scum,'" Lewis wrote. "The chickens, as they say, are coming home to roost."
