OOPS Eric I got really bad news for you. Most likely and certainty for all practical purposes, the "Constitutional Republic" ended when Virginia succeeded from the union on April 17, 1861, 5 days after the war started. No state tried longer or harder to preserve the union as did Virginia--when they succeeded it was clearly over.

However, some say it didn't end until Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. In any case, the Republic is long gone. Over the many years since that time, we have slowly drifted into what many would characterize as Fabian Socialism.

We have of course never had a Democracy, thank Odin for that, and are unlikely to ever enter into that sorry state.
