Elvis was the leading edge of a wave that not only swept ashore, it built its own freaking beach and harbor that has lasted 60 years now. We get to choose from decades of innovative talents whose recorded works live on better than the lame live tours the oldsters do now. I don't see what kids today have to identify with that could last. Apart from popular performers, what was the great new music this century? Fragmentation and commercialization kind of blew it all up.
