Hiking in the Forest...;-}

Sinker,

We're still here... Yes, I've done a little hiking, but mainly just walking in the forest at my farm...surveying the damage from the big ice storm that went through eastern Canada in January. Even after a month, I find it hard to believe the wholesale damage and destruction to the forests here. Maple sugar bushes have been terribly damaged and many farms don't think they will be doing any tapping this year. Here at my own farm, a 2 acre locust tree grove has been practically flattened... many trees fell over from the weight of the ice that built up on the top branches... and I'm talking 50+ foot trees that actually ripped right out of the ground and fell over. Apparently, according to the papers up here... a lot of large trees had a ton or more of ice coating their branches during the worse of the storm... I don't doubt it. Massive birch trees in my forest are bent over like a great white arch and have their tops frozen into the ice on the ground... it certainly makes for a strange landscape when you go hiking in the forest....

Well, let's hear from someone else now...
