I think your attitude that Russia just invaded Ukraine on a whim as simplistic and not useful for the real situation at hand.
It wasn't a whim. It was instead the culmination of PooTin's imperialistic fantasies.

Remember that PooTin already invaded Ukraine in 2014 and took Crimea.

Noticing that he didn't face much opposition, he bided his time until the perfect moment to start his invasion of the rest of Ukraine.

That time never really came, so he just decided to go all-in starting 2022.

Now he's stuck in a quagmire of his own making.

So yeah, PooTin messed up. That's not a simplistic view, but a recognition that PooTin gambled and lost.

Now he (and the rest of the world for that matter) is paying the price.
