PBS science program NOVA did an excellent program on the unique construction of the Twin Towers and how they actually collapsed. The outside walls carried almost all of the vertical loads which made the buildings very rare as it was a new revolutionary construction technique in it's day. The horizontal beams supporting the floors kept the outside walls "in column". When the floor beams sagged under the heat that pulled the outside walls inwards dooming the buildings. Actually many of the outside walls shot out horizontally at high velocities as the towers pancaked thus damaging surrounding buildings as the towers collapsed.
