Wharfie,
You start with the biggest footprints. Take, for example, ours. Let's show American exceptionalism by trying to become emission-free by 2050.
California can't even get there. We can't even build our own high-speed rail.

In that sense, the rest of the world is already ahead of California, much less the rest of the world. Go figure.

We Californians still love our cars. We still love our highways. We still love our single-family homes and our NIMBY culture and our HOAs and all of the other luxuries that the rest of the first world has forsaken, supposedly for the "common good."

Until I see San Francisco and Los Angeles turn into the carbon-free utopias that the rest of the world can emulate, we're NOT going to "lead the world" there.

Instead, the rest of the world will laugh at us as we find new ways to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
