Presuming that the alignment of the one platter on the Sparq is the same as one of the two on the Syjet (a safe assumption) and that the head technology is the same (maybe a safe assumption), enabling the Syjet to read the single (albeit higher density) SparQ platter should be trivial, unless there have been changes to the electronics. If it is just an encoding change (most probable) it would be a matter of a firmware upgrade to allow the Syjet to read the single platter SparQ.

The reverse wouldn't be possible, since SparQ is missing the heads necessary to read a second platter.

I guess the speculation is immaterial, the bottom line is that Syquest, has, once again, screwed their customer base.
