Granholm urges Congress to ban uranium supplies from Russia

U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said Wednesday she will encourage the U.S. Congress to ban uranium supplies from Russia, which she said would allow for more funding for domestic development of fuel for next generation nuclear reactors.

The U.S. House passed legislation in December to ban imports of the fuel for nuclear power plants as part of a response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but similar legislation has been held up in the Senate.

"Hopefully we can get that ban in place in order to unlock" funds, Granholm told a House of Representatives hearing on the DoE budget. "I strongly hope and encourage that Congress does that so that we can move with alacrity."

Axios reported Tuesday that "legislation to ban uranium imports from Russia won't be included in the second minibus package."
