Costs will need to be paid. It's only a question of who pays, and when.

Fires, floods, more severe weather, crop destruction from global warming. Costs developed countries more.

Also, forever plastics, which we must deal with, causing cancer and other diseases, as well as harm in the food chains beginning from the ocean.

Minimizing avoidable costs contribute to the economy and wealth. Yes, all societies must solve sustainability if they are to compete and thrive in the future, and we are interrelated. Let's be the leader here, let's be first without without the guns and stealth bombers.

In a dynamic system free of monopolistic practices and political horseshit, merited change that solves such problems is rewarded. The status quo must give way to the dynamic with (positive) change. Change is constant. Being the leader in sustainability is necessary if a country is to be the world leader.

Or you can go with Elon Musk and just flush the earth down the toilet, and colonize moons and planets. Drive your Tesla around Mars. At least you build the society ground up from solar power.
