TJ, one of the main problems I estimate is the ability to operate such engine over long (hours) periods of time.
Secondly the air friction will heath the vehicle to unsustainable temperatures - e,g. melting or deforming the metal around the flying object.

For short range rockets it may make sense but transporting people from point a to b for 1 to 2 hours at MACH 9 is questionable, and this not taking into account the side effects of the air it travels trough.
