Walt, I was often on the bid. My order would show up on the Level II screen as ISLD being the market maker because that was the ECN that we used. Let me be clear, this is not a SOES thing you can't do this on SOES (as far as I know), this was a function of the Watcher order entry system. This was for NASDAQ stocks.

I know there wer traders that would take a stock that was 1/4 x 1/2 and have a 5/16 bid and 7/16 offer out all the time, just clipping 1/8's and making money doing it. They would also do this with even wider stocks. They called it "playing market maker".

I think you can even do this with Datek Online.

You can also be on the bid with NYSE/AMEX, but more oftne than not if you get it, you don't want it.
