Mike, I agree that with CPQ, having systems that consumers can purchase in multiple retail outlets generates sales. But, to your comment about inexperienced users buying from Dell and GTW, GTW is experimenting with a retail operation. There is one where I live. The idea is that people go to the store, talk to a person there; test drive a few systems, and then with assistance, configure and order the system of their choice from GTW.

Those with who I've spoken all report a very positive experience & all but one of the people I know who have recently purchased a computer - and who went to the GTW store during their search - bought their system from GTW. I would hesitate to globalize my story; but its probably fair to say that if GTW is successful in merging the BTO (Build to Order) merchandising model with a retail model, then...... its fair to say that whatever CPQ advantage currently exists will be mitigated unless CPQ can also do the same thing..... Whatever happened to CPQ's BTO plans??
