| | | Taiwan Semiconductor pauses chipmaking after earthquake hits island nation - report

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM) has paused some chip manufacturing and evacuated facilities after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan on Wednesday morning, Bloomberg News reported.
TSM, the main contract chipmaker for Apple ( AAPL) and Nvidia ( NVDA), has moved employees out of certain areas and noted that it was evaluating the impact of the earthquake, the report added.
The earthquake, which occurred near Hualien City at 7:58 a.m. local time, was the most powerful tremor Taiwan has seen in 25 years. The quake prompted initial tsunami warnings in Taiwan, southern Japan and the Philippines which were later lifted.
Micron Technology ( MU) is also evaluating its operations and supply chain but it noted that all its staff were safe. Micron is the largest foreign investor in Taiwan and its output in the country accounts for about 60% of the company's overall DRAM capacity, the report noted.
Meanwhile, United Microelectronics ( UMC) also paused machinery at some facilities and evacuated certain facilities at its hubs in Hsinchu and Tainan, according to the report. |
