SMS/MMS and iMessage are literally two different messaging systems. If it's a "lower class of service" then it's due to the inherent limitations of SMS/MMS. Apple created its own system that is far more feature-rich than simple text messaging and there's no reason they shouldn't distinguish which one is being used when someone is texting you. In June, Apple is rumored to add RCS messaging to iOS 18 which has more features than SMS/MMS and can be used by both Android and iOS customers. I don't know much more about it other than many see it as a welcome addition. So, your take makes no sense at all.
