Based on the reports I have seen, the HiFD unit at comdex was shown running a high-capacity disk, but it seems that the disk in question was formatted only for 60MB. Moreover, the drive was not shown using standard floppies, because it did not yet have that capability.
Again, this is based on second-hand information to me, which makes it third-hand here. If you saw this drive, maybe you can tell me something different. Did you see them take out the high capacity disk and put in a regular floppy? Did you see any benchmark tests performed? Were you able to verify that the drive you saw was using a full 200MB capacity disk?
As for being afraid of Sony because it's a bigger company than Iomega, I think that's silly. I am less afraid of Sony for that very reason. Sony has a lot of different businesses. Their data storage business is just one small division. I don't know how the size of that division compares with Iomega, but that is the relevant comparison. The size of Sony as a whole is really not an issue. They're not going to suddenly stop making Walkmans, TVs, VCRs, cameras, etc., to concentrate on this one little product.
Iomega, on the other hand, concentrates solely on this particular market. They are focussed and they have enormous resources. I would be willing to bet that Iomega has more people working in R&D than Sony has in their removable storage department.
