>>Allen, most of the people I know consider the devices unreliable for long-term or even intermediate-term storage and my experience concurs with theirs. I'm not claiming they are useless since I use them myself for temporary storage or sneaker-net transfers. I am saying the CLICK...CLICK...CLICK... of brand new cartridges in brand new drives is almost as revealing as the manufacturing problems which Iomega blames on cartridge makers. I use CD-R for storing important information, period.<<

Yesterday you posted that you didn't know anyone who hadn't had trouble with Zip drives. Today we're down to most.

You say the clicking of brand new cartridges in brand new drives is "as revealing as the manufacturing problems which Iomega blames on cartridge makers." Revealing of what, may I ask? And when did Iomega blame a manufacturing problem on cartridge makers? Are you talking about the Jaz disk recall?

Iomega makes the Jaz cartridges themselves. They said that they had a problem with a batch of the thin-film media the received from a supplier. Do you have any evidence to indicate that this is not what happened?

Also, you say you use the Zip drive and disks yourself. I assume that this must mean that you are able to read and write data using them on a regular basis. I'm sure if your Zip drives or disks were failing even 5% of the time you wouldn't be using them. I know I sure as Hell wouldn't.
