Yesterday you posted that you didn't know anyone who hadn't had trouble with Zip drives. Today we're down to most.

Well, this is prose but let me clarify that for you: It has been my experience that Zip reliabilty has been a universal problem although it would not surprise me to discover that those observations are not in fact universal.

You say the clicking of brand new cartridges in brand new drives is "as revealing as the manufacturing problems which Iomega blames on cartridge makers." Revealing of what, may I ask? And when did Iomega blame a manufacturing problem on cartridge makers? Are you talking about the Jaz disk recall?

Again, let me clarify: I believe a brittle design and/or troubled manufacturing process lies at the heart of the well-publicized dispute between Iomega and certain cartridge makers.

Iomega makes the Jaz cartridges themselves. They said that they had a problem with a batch of the thin-film media the received from a supplier. Do you have any evidence to indicate that this is not what happened?

As with the courts, I am not inclined to buy into Iomega's so-called independent analyses of these problems but let me stop you there for just a minute. I wasn't aware of the court battles, press reports or Iomega's own admissions when I posted a matter-of-fact concern about reliability problems. I don't have to tell you how ferocious the response was and the pretext of those rebuttals that I was simply out in left field and that there was nothing whatsoever to it. Apparently my personal experience has a public foundation after all.

Also, you say you use the Zip drive and disks yourself. I assume that this must mean that you are able to read and write data using them on a regular basis. I'm sure if your Zip drives or disks were failing even 5% of the time you wouldn't be using them. I know I sure as Hell wouldn't.

No, I use Zip disks to transfer information between home and office when such information exceeds the capacity of a floppy and it's more practical than e-mailing myself. When there's a problem, I simply get anther disk and try again. If the drive itself has a problem, which they have, I don't use that particular drive anymore. Under no circumstances would I consider storing anything on these disks. However, your mileage may vary.
