I helped Alaska establish alcohol and drug abuse programs in Barrow, Kotzebue, Nome, Bethel, Dillingham and other communities throughout the state and ems programs in the same communities, and wrote, and implemented a plan for a comprehensive emergency medical services system.
Before that we had nothing. If you got hurt or sick they threw you in the car and you might , or might not make it. Today there are thousands of EMTs, paramedics and others who can stabilize you on the scene and transportation protocols.
Alaska now has one of the best ems systems in the world.
I put myself through six years of college by myself working all night in hamburger stands and factories, going to class after my shift ended.
I have cleaned toilets, and meat stores, worked for two years as a pick up boy in a paper bag factory and six years out of the laborers union. I worked an entire summer in a cold storage cleaning fish and washed dishes for a summer in Pismo beach.
My mom was poor and could not help me with college.
I worked for everything I have and really helped Alaska and am proud of it!
