But what about the poor white folks? And the irony it is the southern states who are the poorest.

It seemed to me more about ideology i.e. the Republican party almost always opposes social programs.

And that, IMO, is part of the deal with doing what the rich want i.e. they do not want social programs they will have to pay for with taxes.

Remember how Reagan demagogued social programs with his famous pronouncement :"

Ronald Reagan “The nine most Terrifying Words – ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”

Of course now we know he had alzheimer's!

And in fact, that is exactly what the government is supposed to do HELP!

E.g. as you know, Hoover would not help with the great depression, so they elected FDR and he immediately put millions back to work.

People were dealing with abject poverty and starvation and he helped them , including The New Deal.
