There are 3 things to consider: 1. joining NATO 2. being freeloader in NATO at expense of the US 3. leaving NATO My point was about #1. Being a freeloader is clearly popular, and getting out is unpopular because who wants rock the boat, to be in the crosshairs of the wrath of the US? Look at Yugoslavia / Serbia to see what could happen.
