Re my longstanding problem with an older version of MacOS Safari not being able to access a stock broker website, I recently learned this problem occurred starting back in 2021 for many people, some of who were running more recent Safari and MacOS versions on news Macs. It seems to be an issue with Safari that might have been fixed only for newer Macs. It’s possible the problem is still there since people with newer Macs were still having issues as of a year ago (May 2023).

I’ve found the problem happens when I’m trying to use the bank and brokerage site for TD Canada, Interactive Brokers, the Canada government income tax website, and a few others. The common factor is that all these sites are related to financial, payment, online stores, or personal services that need to be secure and private. It seems that many of these problem sites have been gradually upgraded for better security. The sites have been updated so they check with the user’s web browser to insure that it is secure and relatively current, if not the website will get hung or operate incorrectly or not display properly. Apple might have fixed the problem with the newer Macs and Safari versions, but maybe didn’t bother to fix the problem with older systems. It’s also possible that Apple is not the cause of the problem, maybe the problematic websites are not properly designed.

I’ve switched to FireFox for the problematic websites (recent iPads/iPhones with Safari work too), although I would prefer to keep using MacOS Safari which still works perfectly with most websites. There might be a way for me to fix the Safari problem, but this will take more digging.
