Oldie but goodie. Thanks for the reminder.
I vacillate on what the underlying factor is. Sometimes I lean toward intellect, a lack of capacity for critical thinking. Sometimes education, for example, never learned about probabilities or the scientific method. Sometimes mental illness, maybe a form of paranoia or pathological bias. Sometimes herd mentality, where how you identify determines what you think. Sometimes an overwhelming agenda. Or emotional immaturity.
The way it's supposed to work is that, when you notice something that seems off or that you don't like, you look into it. If there's a simple, plausible explanation and you don't find plausible evidence to refute it, you accept that it's likely to be true pending new evidence. That's what is taught, what's normal, at least it used to be. And there is "something wrong with" those who operate otherwise.
One wonders how we got to where there is no common reality, as you say. |
