How 4-Pin fan splitters work for PWM fans.

This often confuses people.

The top picture shows the entire splitter.

The top photo left side shows the 4-Pin connector that plugs into a 4-Pin fan header on the motherboard.

The top photo right side shows the 2 branches that 2 fans can be plugged into.

The bottom left photo shows the slave plug and is missing the 3rd pin.

The bottom right photo shows the master plug and has all 4 pins.

The reason for this is each motherboard fan header can only read the speed of one fan which is the master that is plugged into the 4-Pin female.

However, the slave plug with the missing pin will run at the same speed as the master.

Also if you wanted 3 fan plugs on a header, you would plug another splitter into the slave plug.

3-way splitters will also have 1 master and 2 slaves.
