ZDR,

Whether accurate or not, Apple is widely believed to have harmed the economics of the music industry by selling individual songs on iTunes, thus hastening the plummet of CD sales. Why buy an entire CD when you can get the one or two good songs on it for a lot less money?
I thought piracy was a big issue when Apple came out with their iTunes Store and helped the industry get back on their feet. Really, how many albums were worth buying for all the songs in the past years? The concept of a well put together album was, and still is, a lost art. But then, I don't listen to much modern music so don't go by what I say.

A fair point... not that Microsoft and other companies are any better. Microsoft is legendary for saying "let's partner together on this" then developing their own competing product that destroys the partner.
I think the ability to reverse engineer anything by brute force makes this a tactic for all the big companies, like Apple, MSFT, Google, Meta etc etc etc. On the flip side, many people try to take advantage of an idea by patenting the idea but having no product or a way to get the product to market.
