Despite its colorful moniker, the Fruit Machine was not used to make smoothies. Instead, this device was developed in order to detect gay men in the ranks of the Canadian government!

The machine, which measured participants' pupil size and pulse while viewing pornographic images, was used on unwitting participants in the Canadian civil service and military who were told the device was simply used to detect stress—although it was always suspected by many to be a primitive form of army "gaydar".

Secret documents later revealed that the machine was, in fact, part of an orchestrated campaign by the Canadian government to systematically eliminate homosexuals from law enforcement, civil service and the military.
