Cruise driverless taxis are back

Cruise

General Motors’ self-driving car unit, Cruise, will return to the road for the first time since one of its vehicles injured a pedestrian.
Only two cars will be deployed at first, both with safety drivers at the wheel. The autonomous vehicle subsidiary is a financial drag on GM, The Verge reported, losing $3.48 billion last year. Since the San Francisco incident — in which a hit-and-run driver struck a woman and knocked her under a Cruise robotaxi which dragged her for 20 feet — it has laid off a quarter of its staff, including founder Kyle Vogt, who has now launched a robotics startup. But GM is betting that autonomous cars are the future, and wants to compete with Tesla, Waymo, and others who are aiming to corner the market.
