Detroit iron were pieces of shit back in the late 1960's early 1970's compared to Honda's, Toyota's and for instance my brother's brand new Datsun 240Z. Man, that was a great sports car. It outcorned my 1967 Mecury Cougar GT. He ate me up in the twisties.
But on the straighaway there is no substitute for HP. 150 Hp vs 335, no contest.
Then GM countered with a modified 350 CID V8 they tried to dieselise to get high MPG.
Pathetic disaster.
I know because I worked on all of them, foreign and domestic.
The 1973 oil embargo took Detroit out of the picture for years. Japan ruled for years with better cars, higher MPG and reliability.
One of the biggest barriers to owning an EV here in America is cost.
The cost gap is closing fast. My Model S has been very, very reliable. Lots of engineers in my neighborhood and most of them have BEV's. Electrons are a heck of a lot cheaper than petrol!
Moreover, the impact to one's driving habits and lifestyles is pretty big given how EV batteries take a relatively long time to charge compared to filling up a gas tank.
We just plug in at home. Maybe once a week if you still have a 9 to 5 job.
