The reason I don't get on planes isn't about safety; it is due to the massive creation of GHGs that results. The best stats I have found say that if you average across all such flights, if you fly 3300 km in a jet airliner, your personal production of GHGs is a ton.

I wish I could find the interview with the expert on turbulence. He said that according to the stats the incidences of turbulence has been increasing for some years as the atmosphere gets more energized. He also differentiated between three types of turbulence. I can't remember the distinction between the first two, but what makes the third group distinctive is that, like the two incidents last week, they occur in clear air with no storms or any other indicators that allows detection in advance.

He also said that it is this undetectable turbulence that is increasing at the greatest rate. They are working on ways to try to detect it, with little success so far. He said that if the incidence continues to increase at current rates, the time could come when everyone is required to remain seated with seat belts on unless scurrying off the bathroom.

Though I do miss travelling. air travel has become such an unpleasant experience I do not miss it at all.
