Saskatchewan braces for cool, ‘unsettled’ weather over May Long Weekend

It’s looking like it won’t be the warmest May Long Weekend on record in Saskatchewan, with rain and thunderstorms expected in many areas.
Environment Canada is calling for “unsettled conditions” across the province over the coming days.
Pointing to Friday’s forecast, meteorologist Justin Shaer said the weather service is expecting some thunderstorm activity in the eastern sections of the province, stretching from Humboldt down to Estevan and towards the Manitoba border.
“It is very likely that there could be some severe thunderstorm watches and warnings over southeastern Saskatchewan later today,” said Shaer.
“Then showery as well on Saturday over central areas with a low-pressure system spinning around Prince Albert,” Shaer added.
“All the areas in around that region will be seeing some showery activity as we get into the May Long Weekend.”
In Saskatoon and Regina, the province’s largest centres, Shaer said conditions will be the same, with unsettled weather and showers.
But in Regina specifically, Shaer said there might be some thunderstorms in the region on Friday.
“You might get some spotty showers late Saturday afternoon as well,” the meteorologist added.
Most areas will see highs in the mid-teens over the weekend.
Shaer said highs usually reach around 20 C this time of year, but that is not going to be the case this weekend.
“Nothing too, too hot this weekend. It’s somewhat cool.”
On the positive side, Shaer said the rainy weather should help keep wildfire smoke away.
