DEVELOPMENT OF LIVER TRANSPLANT PROGRAM ANOTHER STEP IN LOYOLA'S CONTINUED GROWTH AS AN ORGAN TRANSPLANT CENTER

Van Thiel currently holds a $1.6 million National Institutes of Health grant to study the effects of alcohol abuse on the liver and is testing the effectiveness of new treatments for hepatitis C. Brems has been working on the development of an artificial liver that could be used to support liver-failure patients while they await a donor organ. That project may be ready for human trials as soon as next fall. lumc.edu

TWO PHYSICIAN PIONEERS IN TREATMENT OF LIVER DISORDERS DEVELOPING LIVER DISEASE AND TRANSPLANT PROGRAM AT LOYOLA

We welcome the appointment of these two outstanding individuals (Van Thiel and Brems) and expect to develop one of the largest and most scientifically advanced liver disease and liver transplant programs in the nation," said Dr. Richard Gamelli, professor and chairman of Loyola's Department of Surgery.

Brems, who has studied organ rejection in liver transplant patients, reconstruction of the liver artery, and fulminant liver disease (liver failure caused by an allergic reaction or reaction to medications), is currently working on an artificial liver that could be used to support critically ill liver patients who are awaiting transplant. lumc.edu
