Yes, the new OS will run on the M chip, but not on the older Intel chips. Conversely, older files created with older systems on the Intel chip may not be compatible with the new software. For me, it means over 15 years of files created on older MacBook computers would be rendered incompatible, unless printed in pdf that could be opened on any machine. Apple is following the same policy that turned GM into an auto dinosaur – planned obsolescence.

I've owned 8 Macs since the first 1984 model, and an Apple II before that. I will no longer be a customer for any Apple computer.
