I read years ago that Apple licenses data from Waze for Apple Maps traffic info, but I don't know if that's still true, or how Waze obtains the data unless it's from everyone using their app.
I doubt Apple gets it from Google, though I believe they did at first.

Lol, anything big tech has the government can get access to, and often does. In 2016, Apple said they responded to over 20,000 data requests from law enforcement in the 2nd half of that year.
People have been wrongly arrested due to being found in a given area with location data (a geofence warrant).

Google cuts part of team that vets police requests for user data
"The tech giant gives reams of data to police. It has laid off part of the team that ensures those requests are legal."
As for Google's Street Maps, a local friend of mine had her Seattle house blurred years ago on it. I'd assumed the previous owner of the house had done it since he worked for Google, but she said she did it.
In June of 2021, someone set their enclosed carport on fire at 3:00AM in an arson incident and I've wondered if the two things were connected. They were all home asleep at the time and were lucky the youngest daughter woke up not long after the fire was set. That said, their house is the only one on that street with a carport like that, so maybe to the arsonist it was just an easy target. |
