"3com Predicts 10/100base-T to Become Network Standard"

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, 1998 FEB 18 (Newsbytes) -- By Joel D. Pinaroc, Metropolitan Computer Times. Leading Ethernet and Fast Ethernet network interface card (NIC) vendor 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) predicts that 10/100Base-T will become the standard network technology for desktops.
According to 3Com, 10/100Base-T will be able to provide the fastest throughput data rates in either 10 or 100 megabits-per-second (Mbps) environments, right into the desktop. With a 10/100Base-T backbone, the network will apparently be able to provide gigabit performance for bandwidth-intensive network applications.
"A 10/100 backbone for Gigabit Ethernet will provide network users with the ideal platform enabling them to execute, deliver, and implement network applications," said Raj Dhingra, business line manager for 3Com. "We expect 10/100 network solutions to be the standard for enterprise networks using the desktop for 1998 and beyond."
Dhingra noted that an increasing number of companies having different networking needs are finding out that the 10/100 Base-T is an ideal networking platform, minus the high investment that goes with maintaining and operating a high-quality network.
"The trend seems to be that, as networks go faster, the price of network solutions go down. With this trend, more and more companies, either small or as large as the enterprise level, will find the right solution in the 10/100 (range)," added Dhingra.
With this prediction, 3Com is also optimistic that its latest 10/100 products for Gigabit Ethernet will enable the company to continue its leadership in the network market.
3Com also announced recently the availability of its latest network products such as the SuperStack line.
According to 3Com, its latest line of SuperStack 10/100/1000 Hubs and switches are equipped with "cutting-edge technology" such as Smart Autosensing and 17.8 million packets per second capability, among others, in an Ethernet environment.
"Our message to users is 'Why buy 10 Mbps, when you can now afford 10/100 Mbps?" commented Gil Edeza, 3Com Philippines country manager. "We're encouraging users to unlock the full potential of their networks with new, intelligent, high-performance 10/100 desktops supported by bandwidth-boosting Gigabit Ethernet in the data center or backbone."
