Our society is divided between liberals and conservatives. Today the Democratic party is the liberal party and the Republicans the conservative party.

But that wasn't always true, so in our politics one cannot always depend on party affiliation to know which party is/was liberal or conservative.

And as usual the Republicans lie about this distinction all the time e.g. they love to claim Lincoln, who was a northern liberal and would be a Democrat today.

Three of the biggest lies, they love to pin on the modern Democratic party, are the brain dead Southern Dixiecrats (now Republicans) for slavery, and segregation, and who voted against the 1964 civil rights act.

All liberals voted for the 1964 civil rights act. And all votes against it were conservatives.

AND this is the reason African Americans vote Democratic by 90% in every election.

They know who their friends and enemies are.

The Republican party until the first part of the 20th century, was composed of the "Northern liberal free states, and the Democratic party was composed of the brain dead"Southern Slave states".

This changed around 1913 with the election of Woodrow Wilson, but really solidified with FDR. Wilson was a liberal, but also a racist. Common in those days.

And those lies are the perfect metaphor for the fact the Republicans have been on the wrong side of history forever.

The Republicans also opposed FDR's New Deal, which rescued millions of people during the great depression.
