Compaq on Alpha: Platform here to stay

SAN FRANCISCO - An executive involved in last month's stunning buyout of
Digital Equipment Corp. has denied a published report that claimed that Compaq
Computer Corp.'s commitment to the 64-bit Alpha architecture is lukewarm at
best.

The report indicated that Compaq may go as far as to either sell or shut down the
Alpha chip manufacturing plant in the event the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
in the U.S. rejects an earlier deal now under review between Digital and Intel
Corp.
