INTEL CORP.: Chip Factory Is to Be Built At a Cost of $1.5 Billion

[From the WSJ]

Technology Brief --

Intel Corp. said it will build a $1.5 billion chip factory with a new generation of manufacturing equipment at an existing site in Hillsboro, Ore. The computer-chip industry giant, based in Santa Clara, Calif., said the plant will begin production in 2000. The factory will be Intel's first that uses 12-inch silicon wafers, which can hold at least 2.25 times more chips than current eight-inch wafers. It also will feature chips with circuitry that are 0.13 microns in length. A human hair is about 100 microns in width. The factory will focus on advanced research and have more than 120,000 square feet of space, as much as other companies have for their full-scale production factories. The plant will be adjacent to another factory on Intel's Ronler Acres campus in Hillsboro. The company said it expects to spend $5.3 billion on new factories and equipment this year.
