Dataquest Reports Mixed Results for Remote Access Servers and
Access Concentrators Markets in 1997
08:03 a.m. Feb 19, 1998 Eastern

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 1998--Because of
continued demand for access to the Internet and the evolution of
intranets, the worldwide remote access concentrators market grew
47.5 percent in 1997 with revenue surpassing $1.7 billion, up from
$1.2 billion in 1996, according to preliminary market statistics
from Dataquest, a market research unit of Gartner Group, Inc.
(NASDAQ:GART).

As more companies implemented remote access concentrators,
worldwide remote access servers market revenue declined 33.5
percent in 1997.

"Remote access concentrator growth slowed during the second half
of 1997, although strong year-over-year results were achieved,"
said George Hunt, director and principal analyst of Dataquest's
Remote LAN and Internet Access Worldwide program. "We expect the
remote access concentrator market to post strong results in 1998
as vendors add signaling system 7 (SS7) and Voice over IP (VoIP)
support to their mass dial-in platforms and carriers accelerate
their deployment of carrier-class, dial-in platforms."

3Com continued to lead the remote access concentrator market,
although its market share declined by more than 5 percentage points
in 1997 (see Table 1). Ascend remained the No. 2 vendor, followed
by Cisco, which posted the strongest growth for the year.

The remote access servers market continued to lose market share to
remote access concentrators. Cisco's market share grew more than
6 percent in 1997, despite its revenue declining 7.6 percent. Four
of the top five vendors' revenue declined in 1997 (see Table 2).
