Mark-

A couple of years ago CheckFree switched from trying to market their software directly (which would compete with banks for brand name, and cost alot of money to market) to a model where they sit in the background, and provide services to banks, which already have the brand name and trusted relationship with consumers. This, IMHO, was a brilliant move:

It allows them to rely on the banks for most of their marketing (I smile every time I see a Nation's bank PC banking commercial)

It keeps them from fighting a bunch of very large, well financed companies (the banks), instead bringing them on as allies.

It allows them to collect money from all sides in the competition for customer business- kinda like a weapons manufacturer who supplies both sides in a conflict.

One of the reasons we are so excited about this company is that they have been very successful at making alliances with some of the largest banks in the country, and also with the Integrion consortium (www.integrion.net), which is a joint venture between IBM and some of the largest banks in the country.
