It is my contention that the polls are grossly understating the strength of the conservative movement in the USA.
I don't believe it is.

No one doubts the conviction of the rabid MAGA crowd. They are mad, they are enthusiastic about Trump, and they will put their money where Trump's mouth is.

However, their numbers aren't as big as people think it is. I'd say roughly half of conservatives (that includes both registered Republicans as well as non-registered) is rabid MAGA. The other half of conservatives (again, both registered and non-registered) only lean that way.

Trump managed to alienate independents and right-leaning conservatives in ways that would, in normal times, kill a candidacy.

But these aren't normal times, especially after what we witnessed last week.
