Sucks when it is your turn in the health scare department. One thing it made me do is realize that things will never be perfect when the times comes, but dragging your feet isn't going to help. Took 15k from my Roth. 4k to savings account for one my youngest wants to get in the hopper, 4k to each of the boys, and 3k for my granddaughter. Reason for the difference is that the boys got their money over a longer time frame instead of very early like my granddaughter, with less time to compound. Parents and grandparents have a thing about making everything come out as even as possible.
Brings granddaughter to $35,720. Now $52,790. Not yet three, compounded until she is 60, 57 years, at 8% = $4,243,000. Using inflation calculator here, usinflationcalculator.com , you would have needed $496,398 today to buy what $52,790 would have bought in 1967, 57 years ago. I think she can do 8% or better because of the exercise I did here: Message 34001941 Have everything on reinvest, and Shwab says that is a no go now on STE, so sold it.
