Microsoft's Reorg: The Real Winners & Losers www5.zdnet.com
Esteemed ilk sister Mary Jo Foley here. Not one of her better pieces, the excerp goes more toward the humorous side.
Call me a cynic (or worse, as many Microsoft employees have, upon discovering me shuttling unescorted around the Redmond campus on the Magic Corporate Shuttle Schoolbus).
What? Microsofties calling names? To people who are skeptical of the corporate gospel? How can this be? The brilliant Microsofties, who understand things beyond the comprehension of mere mortals, aren't they aware of the logical fallacy of the ad hominem attack?
But doesn't it seem a tad farfetched that Microsoft's decision to disband its "separate" Internet division had absolutely nothing to do with company's claim brought before the DOJ that its Internet browser and underlying operating system, products developed by two different groups, are, in fact, one?
Since we've heard the entire Windows95 team went over to IE, it's hard to say. But then, who did Win98 anyway?
But if you had any doubts before that PBSG and its NT operating system are the forces that will drive Microsoft for the foreseeable future, think again. Internet content and services may grab all the headlines, but less sexy operating systems seem to be where the dollars are.
To paraphrase James Carville, "It's the monopoly, stupid". Though with Windows officially on borrowed time as a standalone OS, as opposed to the bloated middleware layer under NT, the transition will be interesting.
