The reason why we don't get better candidates running for President is because it is a long process that takes about 18 months before you even have the opportunity to get nominated by one of the two parties. And then there is campaigning for the general election. Plus, It costs a lot of money and you need connections inside one of the party's ruling apparatus.. Bottom line: it is a grueling long process that many good people don't want to go through.
