US energy storage specilist Powin has inked a supply deal with utility DTE Energy to deliver a massive standalone battery energy storage project at the site of a decommissioned coal power plant in Michigan.

The Trenton Channel Power Plant, which operated for nearly 100 years, closed in 2022. Now, the site is getting a second life and readying to host a 880 MWh battery energy storage system.

Oregon-based Powin will supply its batteries to the site, helping DTE take a major step toward its goal of more than doubling its total energy storage capacity while also supporting the State of Michigan’s target of 2.5 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030.

Jeff Waters, CEO of Powin, said: “We believe this project will serve as an inspiration for the entire utility sector, demonstrating the potential and impact of advanced energy storage solutions in achieving a sustainable energy future.”

The Trenton Channel Energy Center is projected to come online and be fully operational by 2026. Once completed, the project will rank among the largest standalone battery projects in the Great Lake region.

In another big supply deal, Canadian Solar announced that its battery storage unit e-STORAGE has secured a contract from Austin-based storage developer Aypa Power, part of the world’s largest private equity firm Blackstone, to deliver a 498 MWh DC standalone battery energy storage system for its Bypass Project.

Located in Fort Bend County near Thompsons, Texas, the Bypass Project is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2025. The facility will support the growing energy demand of the greater Houston area.

The project will feature 106 units of e-STORAGE’s latest battery energy storage solution, SolBank 3.0. The batteries will be paired with 65 power conversion systems and controllers.

Each SolBank battery delivers 5 MWh of energy capacity in a 20-foot standardized container, featuring lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry battery cells, an active balancing battery management system, and a liquid cooling thermal management system.

After integrating and commissioning the project to commercial operation, e-STORAGE will provide ongoing operational support for the project under a Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA).

Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, said: “We are excited to announce our third project with Aypa Power by extending our partnership with the award of their Bypass Project. This brings our total commitment to providing Aypa with over 1.3 GWh of integrated energy storage capacity.”
