Maybe it's already time for Republicans to go back to the drawing board. Specificaly, I'm thinking about Colin Powell's decision not to enter the race. The implication that I got was the Republican Party (controlled by right wing/conservative christians), angered by his pro-choice stance, was ready to tear into his family esp. his wife, so he stayed out to spare his family grief. In hindsight, Powell's announcement he would not run was the moment Clinton's re-election was ensured.

So, it's hard to forsee any serious challenge to Gore in 2000, IMHO, unless party control is reestablished by pre-Reagan ("gypsy moth") Republicans who were/are economic conservatives but did not and still do not support religious right's divisive social agenda.

My .02, Mike
