I read somewhere that law enforcement could use the gun serial number to find out which firearms store it was sold to, then use the store's records to find out which customer bought it. Go to the parents' home, get a DNA sample from them and compare it to the shooter's DNA. Other possibilities are that his DNA might have been collected voluntarily when he was a child in one of those "find your missing child" programs they had in some schools/communities, or could have done a "23andme" type gene analysis. Or, they could have asked China, who by now knows everything about all of us. (Only slight tongue in cheek).
