> But at least we don't have to choose to update, they make the choice for us...
Hehe. Therein lies the rub. Back in the day not so long ago, we all had a choice about when and whether to apply patches to our systems, even IT folks in major corporations.
While I miss those days, I understand why that is no longer a useful strategy, at least for protecting large networks and corporations. With ransomware being a very real and present danger and a highly profitable enterprise for hackers, vulnerabilities have to be addressed quickly if you're the gatekeeper in charge of protecting them.
Malicious actors are another threat, of course, and the CrowdStrike problem goes to show just how tenuous the internet really is. We found out a lot when Russia invaded Ukraine and Russian government hackers got involved.
As for Taboola and Apple advertising, I noticed when used the Apple News app, it is littered with large ads embedded within articles, though most are not animated. I don't think they go away if you pay for Apple News+ either, but I could be wrong. You just gain access to articles hidden behind its paywall.
I'm considering building and installing a Pi-hole on my network to block all ads before they even hit my router, but that'll require more research and planning to make sure its what I need. |
